The Last Olympian, by Rick Riordan is the last book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series.  The Last Olympian is the conclusion of the other four books, while it isn’t the last of the books it is the end of Rick’s first series.  Rick Riordan was born on June 5, 1964 he was born in Texas in the city of San Antonio. He was the editor of his high school newspaper, he made third place in Texas for UIL feature writing. He once got his car egged by the football team for making fun of their losing streak. He went to North Texas State because in the beginning he wanted to pursue a career of being a guitar player, but Rick then transferred to the University of Texas in Austin to where he majored in English and history.
During his childhood Rick became interested in Greek and Norse mythology, he read science fiction and fantasy till college in where he read mystery.  The other works that Rick Riordan wrote were the Kane Chronicles, 39 clues series, and the Heroes of Olympus. He has also written other books for adults the books are the last King of Texas, Big Red Tequila, The Widower’s Two-Step; The Devil went down to Austin, Cold Springs, South town, Mission Road, and Rebel Island. He is now happily married and has two kids named Haley and Patrick; he is currently living in San Antonio with his family.
In the conclusion of the series The Last Olympian, Percy has to defeat Kronos the father of the eldest three. He has to fulfill the prophecy which is “A half-blood of the eldest gods, Shall reach sixteen against all odds, and see the world in endless sleep, the hero's soul, cursed blade shall reap, a single choice shall end his days. Olympus to preserve or raze.” (Rick Riordan, The last Olympian, and PG55-56) This prophecy was made seventy years ago and now the prophecy will come to an end. Percy has to protect Olympus and has to make a choice in what will save Olympus or destroy it. If he makes the wrong choice then Kronos will take over Olympus and destroy the Gods seats. Which are the only connection they have to Olympus and without them they are nothing. Then all the demigods will be tracked down by the Titans and destroyed.
This whole story takes place in three major places, the underworld where Percy is betrayed by Nico di Angelo son of Hades who had lost his sister in the third book Titan’s Curse. He took Percy to his father thinking that he would just question Percy and then let him go. Instead Hades kept Percy thinking that if he did that then Nico would be the child in the prophecy. Instead after Percy got locked up Nico helped him escape and took him to the River Styx’s which he had to go to his mother’s apartment and get the blessing for dipping in to the river to defeat Kronos. Percy and Nico also went to May Castellan to get information on Luke and know his enemy. The final and major place this story took place is New York City in where the fight with Kronos took place.
The major characters in this story are Percy who has to fulfill the prophecy and either save or destroy Olympus. Annabeth the daughter of Athena, she and Percy are really close she had helped him through all the books. Grover is Satyr and was the one that was with Percy from the beginning, he has gone with Percy and Annabeth almost everywhere. Nico di Angelo he became close with Percy at the end of the fourth book The Battle of the Labyrinth. Thalia Grace who was the daughter of Zeus, she then became a hunter so Olympus could have more time to prepare for Kronos because it was close to her 16th birthday in which the prophecy was supposed to come true. To become a hunter is to swear an oath that you will not love or age forever.
Rachel Elizabeth Dare who was like Percy’s mother she could see through the mist and helped Percy in the fourth book by leading the way through the Labyrinth. Clarisse is the Daughter of Ares the god of war and slayed Drakon and getting revenge for Aphrodite’s daughter Silena’s death. Silena and Beckendorf started dating; Beckendorf was killed in the battle on the Princess Andromeda, he sacrificed himself for the Gods and Olympus. The rest of the characters are Gods who had to fight Typhon the one thing that almost made them lose the war against Titans during the last war. There are the counselor’s and camper in camp half-blood that helped during the war, and they risked their lives for their Godly parents.
In the beginning of the book Percy is enjoying an afternoon with Rachel when Beckendorf comes and tells Percy that it’s time to go. They go to the Princess Andromeda a ship that first Luke was using, and now Kronos who is in Luke’s body is using . There Beckendorf and Percy go and try to blow up the ship. In the end Beckendorf and Percy get caught and Beckendorf hit the detonator and Percy dived into the sea after he tried to fight Kronos but he was hit by Kronos’s sword and he felt his energy draining as he hit the water the last thing he thought about was Beckendorf before he blacked out. He woke up and saw his half-brother Tyson, he then found out that he was in his father’s palace where his father told him that it was time he heard the whole prophecy. He heard the Prophecy and realized that he only had a few days left until he died.
Percy and Nico then shadow traveled to May Castellan to find out more information on Luke’s past. They met Hestia who gave up her seat on the council for Dionysus; she is what the book title referred to. Hestia was the last Olympian she gave up her seat for peace in court. She told Percy to think about her when he made his last and final decision that would affect Olympus. He comes to the River Styx where he dipped in and the only thing that kept him sane was Annabeth. When he came back everyone prepared for battle the time was upon him he then posted everyone at places where Kronos would most likely strike. Everyone was in position and everything was in place. Kronos aimed for the weaker points where weaker soldiers and fighters were positioned.
A Titan named Prometheus visited Percy and gave him the Pandora’s Box, Prometheus is telling Percy to give up hope .To stop the war give up because there is no way that there was no way he could beat Kronos. While the gods are fighting Typhon they are not at all winning Dionysus was thrown at a mountain and is under tons of rumble. Rachel had message for Percy and she came back from her vacation to tell him. The message she gave him was “Perseus you are not the hero.” (Riordan, The last Olympian PG 278) Nico at that moment is trying to convince Hades to join the war to help the other Olympians, because if they lose he fades with them.   Soon Silena tries to lead the Ares cabin but dies at doing so, and then everyone learns that she was the spy inside camp. Clarisse in anger killed Drakon for revenge, and Silena was not known as the spy but a hero.
Percy gives Pandora’s Box to Hestia, because she is the Last Olympian and because Hope also survives best at the Hearth.  Percy then climbs on his father throne which is a very dangerous thing to do because the God or Goddess could kill you. He convinced his father to come and help the Gods and Goddesses fight and leave his palace to save Olympus. Hades come to Olympus and occupies Kronos’s army while Kronos tries to get away not before Typhon comes, all the Olympians are giving their last amount of effort to stop him. Then Poseidon came and helped take down Typhon who then sank into Jersey shore.
In the end when Kronos hit Annabeth Luke came back and took control and said that he needed to

kill himself. Annabeth gave the sword that Luke gave her when she was seven he took it and stabbed

it into himself he died. He was the hero the cursed blade was Annabeth’s knife.

Luke was the real hero of Olympus he killed himself for Olympus and Percy said “We need a shroud……” “A shroud for the son of Hermes” (Riordan, the Last Olympian PG 338) Hades came to Olympus and got great comments and had a hero’s welcome from everyone. Percy, Annabeth, Thalia, Tyson, and Grover were each given something. Thalia promised to help filling the Hunter’s ranks. Tyson requested a stick and Zeus said he’d give him the best stick ever made. Grover was named fit to join the Council of Cloven Elders; Annabeth was then named the official architect of Olympus. Percy was given the chance to be a god instead he requested that all gods should be recognized even minor gods, by the age of thirteen they should know who their godly parent is.
The story was enjoyable, because it had a twist of just a normal boy with girl issues but it also showed that he didn’t give up hope. He made the right choices that saved Olympus; he didn’t try to do this on his own not only did Percy stand up tall. Percy had loyal friends that stood ground with him. They all showed perseverance, integrity, which lead to their excellence. When Percy in the book was told to give up hope, he didn’t he not only encouraged himself to go forward. He had friends by his side telling him to not give up, he had determination he looked forward no matter the obstacles in his way.  As the writer to recommend this book, it would probably go to the whole class. The class would enjoy it because; it started with a twelve year old to a sixteen year old that had to face difficulties the class could only imagine. It showed that he never gave up no matter what was in his way.
